Personality: Positive Traits
- Ellie is a survivor in a harsh and unforgiving world, which means she is highly perceptive, clever, and resourceful. She is able to navigate her way through dangerous situations of terrain, infected, and human enemies throughout both games. Ellie knows when to engage, when to be stealthy, and how to use the world around her to her advantage depending on her strategies. She has kept herself and her companions alive in dire situations through quick thinking and ingenuity. This is reinforced when the player encounters Ellie as an enemy in the second game: the slightest sound will alert Ellie to your presence and she will move in ways to lure the player towards traps that she has set, making her an extremely formidable force to encounter.
- Despite the violence required to survive in the world she was born into, Ellie has an innate humanity to her. She wants her immunity to the Cordyceps infection to mean something, to help the rest of the world escape the hell that they're in, to make things better. She is willing to sacrifice herself for the hope that she could help create a cure. When Joel denies her this opportunity, she is devastated and feels personally responsible when she learns people she knew have become infected. Even at the end of the second game, after Ellie has caused so much violence and destruction in the name of revenge, she ultimately cannot go through with killing someone who she sees has also clearly suffered, and instead chooses to break the cycle of violence and strive towards forgiveness
- Though she became slightly more subdued in her older years, Ellie is friendly at her core and gravitates towards connections with other people. Despite arriving in Jackson later than all of her friends, she formed a fast friend group with Dina and Jessie and even had a few romantic flings. She enjoys being with other people and will protect them with everything she's got. Ellie has a snappy wit and a knack for banter and jokes. She loves a good (bad) pun and any facts about space and dinosaurs. She's also enthusiastic about nerdy loves to share her passions with other people, such as drawing sketches of her friends or playing guitar for them.
- Ellie is impulsive and rash, often unable to keep her mouth shut to save her own skin. In multiple instances, she taunts people who have her at their mercy or says something callous to a person she cares about. Sometimes, she just seems a little too headstrong, however, she can easily spiral into violent obsession and callousness. She crosses the country to kill someone who wronged her, losing regard for the safety of her friends in the process. Ellie knows that she needs to stop in her quest for revenge, as every day gets worse, but she can't pull herself out of the anger. She feels She tries to use a torture technique for interrogation, acts too quickly, and ends up killing a pregnant woman in the process. The act horrifies her enough that she agrees to return home but she still can't shake the desire to continue.
- Ellie struggles with processing her emotions and showing vulnerability with other people. Joel taught her to keep her emotions under wraps and not talk about them. When she tired, he would shut her down, to the point of gaslighting her. When she discovers what he did to the Fireflies, she cuts off their relationship in anger, instead of processing why it hurt her so badly. In her journal, she writes how her girlfriend Dina tries to encourage her talk to her about the losses she's experienced, but Ellie just can't: it feels wrong to her. Her emotions are a floodgate that she's holding back. It gets to the point where her PTSD is so bad that she abandons her family, unable to find anyway to work through her grief other than trying to attempt revenge again, despite the damage it caused to herself and her loved ones.
- Ellie is lost soul with a lot of self-loathing. She believed it was her purpose to die for the cure and when she learned that was taken from her, she struggled to accept and understand what she was supposed to do with her life if not to be the cure. Some of her fury at Joel's killer, is actually fury at herself, both for her failure to reconcile with Joel before it was too late and for still being alive when so many people she knew died. She struggles to accept that she is allowed to just live without being expected to serve a greater purpose and to be able to determine her own path.
Negative traits
Powers/Abilities:
Ellie is a normal human with no extra powers (aside from her immunity to the Cordyceps fungus). However, as mentioned above, she is a skilled survivalist and knows how to craft various weapons as well as do basic survival like hunting, scouting, creating shelter etc.
Regret: Ellie regrets icing out Joel for so many years, only to try and reconcile with him the day before he died. Even if his death could never be undone, at least she could have that time back with him, trying to work towards forgiving him.
